Healthy Habits and Your Job Hunt: The Two Can Coexist

A season of unemployment often means stress, and when you’re stressed, it’s easy to hyperfocus on the task at hand (finding a job and getting paid) and let everything else slide. However, forgetting basic self-care and letting go of healthy habits could actually hurt your job search in the long run, as you’ll burn out quickly, and won’t be able to offer your best when an opportunity comes around. Practice these helpful hints to keep yourself at your best while still staying strong in your search for work:

  • Get plenty of rest. Staying up all night long looking through job boards and classifies might seem like a good use of your time, but failing to get adequate sleep will make you sluggish the next day, will make you more likely to leave typos and mistakes in your applications and resumes, and will affect your long-term health. Aim for at least 7 hours of quality rest each night, and put down your phone/computer/newspaper to make sure you can focus on getting those zzzs.
  • Take time to get out of the house. Your job search will likely keep you indoors a lot, as you’ll be making phone calls, sending in applications and resumes (online or through the mail), looking through job boards, etc. Make an effort to get outside of your house for at least 30 minutes each day. Throw on your mask and run any needed errands, take your dog for a walk around the neighborhood, or just jump in the car and go for a ride with your favorite music and a cup of coffee. Feeling sun on your face, and changing up the scenery isn’t just good for your health, but is also good for your motivation. You’ll come back home ready to hit the job hunt hard again.
  • Keep connections with community. We know it’s hard right now thanks to COVID and social distancing rules, but staying in touch with your friends and community is an important part of self-care. Not only do they offer an emotional and mental support system, but they are a valuable source of job leads and connections to help you get hired faster. Losing touch with everyone around you will isolate you personally, and could potentially make you lose out on possible job openings as well.
