Balancing a career, your personal life, and your various obligations and commitments is hard on the best of days, but when you’re in the midst of trying to find a job, or are in the process of putting the right foot forward in a brand new position, the feeling of stress can be escalated. Nothing will further heighten the feelings of being overwhelmed more than disorganization, as it means you spend valuable time you don’t have trying to find items you need, put together a last minute schedule (or scramble to fix an over scheduling error), or make sure you check everything off your list without dropping the ball on something important. When you develop an organized lifestyle, it helps everything flow more smoothly, and that will mean you enjoy a less-stressed day-to-day life.
A few simple (inexpensive) organizational tools can help you kickstart the journey toward a more organized existence.
Having a calendar that you actually utilize and keep up with is vital in staying organized. Whether you choose a large-scale wall calendar or a simple pocket planner, you need a place to “dump” all scheduled activities, appointments, work deadlines, etc. so nothing gets forgotten. A system we suggest? Use your pen-and-paper calendar as a place to dump everything on a day to day basis, and then take a few moments each evening to enter anything new into your digital calendar (a.k.a. your phone) and set up reminders and alerts as needed so you know you won’t forget anything important. Did your doctor schedule your next visit on a business card? Throw that card in your calendar! Daughter hand you her updated soccer schedule printout after practice? Throw that in there too! If your boss mentioned a last-minute meeting before you ran out the door, take a moment to jot down the date, time, and a quick note about it. In the evening you can organize all of these, enter the various dates and times into your digital calendar, and feel prepared and ready for the upcoming weeks as you know you’ve got it covered.
A good bag.
This might seem silly, but having a good bag, briefcase, backpack, or purse is another great way to stay organized in your day to day life. Not only is this a good place to keep your aforementioned calendar or pocket planner, but it’s also the best place to keep important papers you need, keys, your wallet, sunglasses, your phone, your lunch, etc. By having a “command center” such as a backpack or purse, you have a way to prepare for each day beforehand. For example, you can have your children’s medical records needed for school, your notes for a staff meeting, your earbuds for your lunchtime walk around the parking lot, and your sneakers all packed the night prior, so you aren’t rushing to grab everything during a hectic morning (only to forget something) and ending up late and disheveled. Additionally, your bag is a way to stay organized throughout the day, as it gives you a spot to place everything as it comes to you, and then you can sort and process it at the end of the day when you aren’t under a time crunch.
There’s an app for that!
The world of technology has many benefits, not the least of which are the plethora of apps available for consumers. When you’re trying to get organized, there are apps specifically tailored to help you achieve that goal. From simple, free platforms that are mainly calendar based, to full-scale (purchased) applications that help you meal plan, schedule carpool rides, and upload your meeting notes all in once space, there’s almost always an app that will meet your needs. Taking a few minutes during your day off to research some options and find what will fit your needs (and/or the needs of your family) and setting it up on your phone or tablet is a worth investment of time and can essentially offer you a “personal assistant” in your journey to organization.
