Today we prepare to bid farewell to 2018 and all it brought, and head into 2019 with new goals, resolutions, and hopes for what a new year will bring. For some of us, a new year might mean moving into a new home (or to a new state!), adding a new member to the family, facing major life changes with kids going off to college or getting married, or even changing up your career. Are you thinking it’s time to make the career switch this year? While happiness isn’t going to be a feeling you experience 100% of the time in your chosen profession, if your job is making you miserable and is affecting your overall quality of life, it might be time to try something new.
Here are some signs that it might be time to bulk up your resume and hit the job trail:
Lack of Motivation. No, you won’t feel ready and raring to go each day you walk into the office, but if you step behind your space each day with a complete lack of motivation for your tasks at hand, you might need to do some introspective investigation as to exactly why you’ve lost your zest. If it’s simply exhaustion from home circumstances, distaste for a specific project to be completed at work, or even a period of sickness that has left you feeling less than 100%, you might be able to work through it and regain your zeal, but if the lack of motivation has been long-lasting and it’s just not coming back, it might be time to evaluate your situation and attempt to make a chance.
Discord Among Coworkers. Nothing can make you consider a job change more than disagreement or discord among your fellow staff members. Facing a hostile environment on a daily basis can wear you down mentally and emotionally, and will not only affect your well being, but will be detrimental to your productivity and efficiency in the workplace. Obviously, the first choice is to attempt to work out the issues with intervention by superiors or HR department, but if this doesn’t work, or if your superiors are part of the problem, you might need to find a more supportive environment.
Limited Upward Mobility. If you started your job with the desire to move up in the ranks (and on the pay scale), it’s disappointing when, 5 years later, you’re in the exact same position. If you’ve put in a good effort by taking on extra projects and going the extra mile for your employer, maintained high quality work and efficiency in the workplace, and tried to be a motivator and peacemaker among the staff, yet your superiors seem not to notice when each promotion comes up, you might want to look elsewhere for your future employment opportunities. Staying in a job where you aren’t appreciated and won’t be able to move up over time will eventually lead to lessened motivation and poor work quality. Don’t let it happen to you!
