Be The Coolest Person in Your Office (Literally): 3 Tips for Staying Cool in the Workplace This Summer

Attention Florida employees: the weather is hot, but you don’t have to be! Offices are notorious for being too hot or too cold, during the day, and since the temps in Florida often soar to the upper 90s or higher during the summer, workers here know all too well the feeling of suffering through the work day in a hot, stuffy cubicle or warehouse. While we can’t change the weather, we can help you make some simple changes to keep you cooler and more comfortable during your work day.

Try these 3 tips this summer to stay cool and make your work day a little easier to manage:

  1. Choose your wardrobe carefully. During the summer, choosing office wear can be difficult, especially if you have a dress code. When possible, opt for breathable, natural fabrics like cotton. If you can find clothing options that wick away moisture from the skin and keep you dry that’s optimal. Avoid dark colors if you can (unless it’s a uniform requirement for your work place) since these absorb heat and make you feel warmer than you would otherwise. If your office tends to blast the AC at various points during the day, but it’s roasting during other portions of the afternoon, layering will be your friend. Being able to put items on (or take them off) as needed will help you adjust as the temperature changes during the day.
  2. Consider a personal fan. While each office will have its own individual rules and regulations regarding what you are/aren’t allowed to have in your work space, most employers won’t have a problem with you having a small personal fan at your desk, as long as it’s quiet to run and doesn’t disturb anyone around you. While it won’t cool the air as a whole, it will offer some airflow and give the feeling of being cooled, and that can help you make it through the daily 3:00 slump when the office gets hot and you’re ready for a nap!
  3. Stay hydrated. Staying cool happens from the inside out, and staying hydrated is important in making sure your body is efficiently managing its temperature. Invest in a good water bottle or drinking container, and keep it filled throughout the day. Aim to get in your 64 suggested ounces of water in each day, and you’ll be surprised at how many health benefits you’ll see!
