Dressed to Impress: 3 Tips to Show Your Professional Wardrobe Some Love This Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is this week, and individuals everywhere are planning the perfect outfit for the big day. From couples who are planning extravagant dinners out, to girls and guys brainstorming fun activities to do with groups of friends, everyone wants to look their best on a day that’s all about love. While you put all that thought into an outfit that will be worn just one day though, we have to wonder…how much thought have you put into your professional wardrobe lately?

Your work wardrobe gets a lot of wear and tear…literally! The pieces of clothing you wear for work each day face more washing and drying time than any other parts of your wardrobe, yet you probably don’t put a lot of thought into replacing them or freshening them up very often. After all, who really wants to spend time thinking about what to wear to work? It’s a lot more fun to put together your holiday outfits, or a wardrobe for the weekends…right?

We want to prove that wrong. You wardrobe for work can be FUN, and you don’t have to break the bank to make it so. Try these 3 tips to make your wardrobe enjoyable so getting dressed in the mornings will be fun again!

  1. Shop your closet! Do you enjoy browsing sites like Pinterest for outfit inspiration? Often, these boards where people “pin’ photos, recipes, website links, bits of information, etc. will have pictures of outfits that include everything from the earrings down to the shoes. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to go out and buy the exact outfit you see in order to “get the look”, but that’s not the case. You can shop your closet and many times get similar looks without spending a dime, or at the very least, by spending very little. How should you shop your closet? First, take out everything you wear and sort it into categories (pants, shirts, skirts, etc.). Look for common pieces that you’ve seen in several of the outfits you’ve pinned or wished for, and lay them aside. You’ll be surprised how many outfits you already own 3/4 of the pieces for. Then, you can make a condensed list of a few things you still need to complete the looks. Notice that 3 of your favorite outfits used a white t-shirt or blouse as the base? That would be a worthwhile purchase to enhance your wardrobe! Does just one outfit use a VERY unique pair of hot pink earrings? That might not be worth it for just one look. Maybe you can exchange a pink bracelet you already own instead, or a pair of gold earrings in a similar style. Be creative and have fun with it!
  2. Know your color palette, and stick to it. In the back of your closet there’s probably a piece or two of clothing that never get worn, simply because they aren’t a color you reach for often, and/or they are hard to match to anything else you own. This is why we encourage you to find a color palette that works for you (based on your skin tone, complexion, preferred colors, etc.) and stick to it. By working within a palette, pieces you choose can be easily interchanged to mix and match outfits and keep your wardrobe interesting. Of course, it’s always important to keep basics too, like a good pair of well-fitting jeans, tailored work slacks, etc.
  3. Accessorize often. While trends in clothing change frequently, there are basic pieces that will ALWAYS be in style. Financially, it’s best to stick as closely to the classics as possible so you won’t be chasing after trends and wasting your hard earned money, but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be bland. Accessories are a great way to stay on trend, without breaking the bank. Watch for popular seasonal colors and/or patterns and consider picking up a belt, a purse, or a pair of earrings that reflects that idea. Pair it with some simple basics and you still look fresh and modern, but you won’t have to replace your entire outfit when the trend goes out of style.

We hope this inspires you to get out there and enjoy getting dressed for work each day. Your clothing helps you put your best foot forward, and that’s important no matter your career.
