Did telework become part of your life over the last couple of years? While working from home has many benefits (no commute, access to your home’s amenities during the day, and comfort), there are also aspects of your workday that can be complicated when working remotely. For those who are currently unemployed and in the application and interview process though, the complication of no face-to-face time is even more difficult, since many employers are utilizing technology to save time and broaden their hiring zone with remote workers. Meetings are the primary issue to overcome, as most interviews are done in person, but thanks to the many virtual options available today, many applicants are overcoming that barrier and continuing forward with their hiring process.
PHR Staffing Solutions is hearing from many employers that they are offering digital applications, phone interviews, interview by web conference (like Zoom), etc. We think this is great for our applicants, but we do feel the need to share some information about how to best handle a digital interview so you can put your best foot forward when it’s your turn.
Remember:
Security Matters! With such a wide variety of virtual meeting platforms available now, it’s almost absolute that at least a few will be “bad apples” and have issues like information and data leaks, lack of end-to-end encryption, and so forth. Be sure to thoroughly research your chosen platform. If your employer requires you to use a specific platform, be mindful of the level of security and respond in kind, so you can best protect yourself and your information.
Prioritize Presentation. How you present yourself matters when you walk into a traditional interview, and while you won’t be donning a suit and tie or practicing your handshake, you still need to be prepared to present yourself well regardless of the digital platform chosen. Take the time to get dressed and make yourself look professional. Showing up to an interview in your pajamas and generally appearing unkempt is never a good idea. It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and do your best to display a generic background. Having your spouse cooking dinner behind you, or meeting on your patio where a neighbor is easily seen taking care of yard maintenance is not the most professional way to engage in a meeting and won’t gain any points with your potential boss.
Limit Distractions As Much As Possible. Try to keep your interview free of as many distractions as possible. We understand that life is happening around you, and the occasional interruption of a child crying or a dog barking is likely going to be the norm…but constant noise and disruption not only makes it difficult for you to focus, but can be frustrating for your interviewer(s) as you’ll appear disengaged or not fully present. You don’t necessarily need a home office to retreat to, but try to find a quiet space like a bedroom, dining area, or any other place that allows you to keep others out and the noise level to a minimum.
