Want to Impress? Watch How You Dress

Interviews require a lot of preparation. Honing your resume, practicing common interview questions, and checking your references are key in a successful meeting with your potential employer, but they aren’t the only way you should prepare. People say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and when you show up for an interview, the way you are dressed provides that “picture” for your interviewer, and is a huge part of your first impression. Here are some tips to be sure that you’re dressed to impress when you walk into your next interview.

  • Watch out for wrinkles. Wearing clothes that look like they’ve been slept in is definitely not the way you want to show up for a follow up from your job application. Take the time the night before your interview to press your pants, shirt, or dress and hang it neatly in your closet or bathroom in preparation for the next day. This will ensure that you show up looking put together and professional.
  • Shine bright. Shoe shining is a detail often overlooked by professionals, but it does matter. Prepare for your interview by either shining your shoes at home, or having someone do it ahead of time. It’s the little things that have a big impact on your look!
  • Hair matters. For men, keeping their hair trimmed neatly (including facial hair) is key in having a well-groomed and professional appearance. Women can wear their hair either down and neatly trimmed and styled, or placed into a professional updo.
  • Avoid being loud. This includes wearing overly bright colors, clothing that is too risqué (too short, too tight, or otherwise too revealing), or heavy overdone makeup. Keep your look clean, streamlined, and professional, and you’re sure to make a great impression.
